Alice's Adventure
I've arrived in Mwanza which will be my home now for the next 10 weeks! It's really different to dar-the streets are clean and smooth and there seem to be alot less people but it's still pretty hot!
We flew to mwanza via Kilimanjaro airport which was incredible-the land is really flat and then out of nowhere came this enormous mountain! Straight away I was like 'That's it! I have to climb it!' haha but it does look huge! I got some pictures of it out of the aeroplane window which are quite good (abit misty) so i will try and put them on my travel journal but i haven't been able to find a computer where you can put photos on yet, althouh i think there is a cafe here in mwanza where it works!
We were met at the airport by fred who runs the orphange-he seems really friendly and helpful as does Grace who also runs the place! they are like the Mum and Dad - they sit on the chairs in the living room whilst 50 kids cram in and sit on the floor to watch tv! Fred took us straight to the orphanage to meet the kids who all said 'good morning madam, my name is...' which was really cute but i can't remember any of their names which is really bad! they all call us 'teacher' although i haven't taught them anything yet and am pretty worried about actually having to do that (we start tomorrow
We then went to the compound to meet the other volunteers who are both lovely and helpful-they have been showing us around town and showing us the ropes today. The compound is quite nice-the living room is really comfy but there's been no water for days and the toilet doesn't flush properly which isn't very nice! Also the bathroom needs a serious clean which i think i might try and do this afternoon! We each have our own room with wardrobes which is also good! There are 2 women that live in the other house who cook and supposedly clean for us but apparently there has been some trouble with them talking loudly very late at night keeping everyone awake and also looking into people's bags (althouh there has been nothing stolen) which is abit worrying! I think the other volunteers have said somethin to Fred and he's sorting it out though so that's good!
I've been feeling really homesick today (even though i've only been gone a week) but i think it's normal - in Dar i knew i was only there a week but now this is 'home' and it's very different from england home! I'm sure i'll be fine though i'm just looking forward to getting to know the kids better as that's the reason i'm here. They seem very well looked after and happy so it's all good! I'm very nervous about teaching as i have no idea how to go about it but the other volunteers who have been here 5 weeks say it's easy! Phew!
