Alice's Adventure
I was really lucky to get my flight as Heathrow was manic-thousands of people waiting in the car park as their flights had been cancelled or delayed. But Kenya Airways seemed to be running as normal and my flight was only an hour late leaving (although I had to run through Nairobi airport to catch my connection!)
Dar Es Salaam is incredible! We went to a beautiful beach on sunday-it was like the Carribean and it even had a camel for tourists to ride! Haha! But it's not all been as easy as that! We've been having swahili lessons for about 6 hours a day which although the language is relatively simple it's far too much to take in! I'm loving it though and my teachers are great! It's really cool to actually have a conversation with someone in their language and for them to understand small amounts of what you're saying!
We went to the sokomi (market) today which was crazy!! There were people and piles of fruit and vegetables everywhere-it was really hot and kind of overwhelming but in a good way! We even went in to a fish market (can you believe i wasn't sick?!) which i wanted to take a picture of to prove to you all but it's quite rude to do that in alot of places so many of my pictures are on the sly!
We also went to a football match at the national stadium which was a team from Dar against a team from Uganda-we won 2-0! The team are actually staying at the salvation army hostel where we are because the stadium is just down the road-they're a premier league team so that's like arsenal staying at a YHA in London! Crazy! the match wasn't as carnival like as I expected but it was quite busy as it was the semi final of the East African cup!
The salvation army hostel is great-there are little huts with a proper toilet (Yey!) and a shower that doesn't work but a big bucket and jug so it's not all bad! There is also a primary school which is where we have our swahili lessons! The kids are 3-5 and they're so gorgeous! They come running up to hug you ansd shake you're hand shouting 'shikamoo' which is a respectful greeting! Within 10 seconds there are about 50 kids surrounding you - i keep nearly getting knocked over!
The weather here is good-not too hot with a good breeze but it gets pretty humid in town and today it poured for about 10 mins but then the sun came out! I've actually been cold at night sleeping in a jumper and thick socks can you believe?! The mosquito situation is also not too bad-you can see them around but touch wood I haven't been bitten yet! The pace of life here is really different too, every other day there is no electricity for 12 hours!!
Anyway I have to go the internet cafe is closing-we have just been out for a meal which cost around 2 pounds each and a beer which was 45p! Buses tend to be about 15p! There is so much more I want to tell you but i will try and email again soon! Sorry if I've rambled on it's just so different here that there's so much to say but I'm so happy and I really feel at home!
