We got a bus to Jaipur early in the morning (6 hours and the driving insisted on honking his horn the whole way… even when there was nothing else on the road!) In the afternoon we walked around the main part of the city with our guide and then did some shopping! Jaipur is the capital of Rajasthan and it has some great shopping… lovely patch work wall hangings and amazingly bright skirts!
The next morning we went to see the Amber Fort which was magnificent and huge but quite dilapidated (lots of graffiti and falling down walls) although it did seem to be undergoing some reconstruction work. Our guide wasn’t so good here so the tour was a bit boring and I didn’t really appreciate the place as much as I perhaps should have. There were elephants taking people up to the fort – they were beautifully decorated with paint but seemed to be being treated quite badly which was such a shame… I did get to stroke one though!
In the afternoon we went to see a charity project supported by Intrepid. It was called ‘I-India’ and it helped to get children off the streets and supported them whilst teaching them a craft. We visited the drop in centre where the girls were making jewellery to sell.
That night we went to the Raj Mandir theatre to see the Bollywood film ‘Vivah’ – ‘The Wedding’! The cinema was like a theatre with big curtains and everyone clapped and cheered throughout! The whole film was in Hindi but was relatively easy to follow and the music, singing, dancing and costumes were fantastic! I really enjoyed it!
