Alice in Wonderland....literally!!
Hola everybody!
So I arrived in Lima yesterday at about midnight and have since attempted to settle in. The flight went fine, (a small thanks to my new best friend-valium!!) Anyway arrived at the house where I'm staying and it is really nice, quite small room, but I have a duvet!! Have put pictures and stuff up so it seems quite cosy.
We went to the orphanage today for a water fight, but first had a look around (a good one hour walk!) It is absolutely massive, and all but two of the buildings have windows intact! The english lab was built by the volunteers last year and is one of only two classrooms to have white boards. It also has some maps and posters on the wall to brighten it up a bit.
When we walked through, about 5 girls came running at us and just clung onto our arms asking us questions adn playing with our hair! They are so cute, but really cheeky. This kept happening as we walked around the 'campus'. The older boys, 10-14 give you a kiss on the cheek and then walk away in their 'cool'manner, but then you hear them giggling like little girls and they run off!! As we continued the tour we met loads more of the kids, a group of about 20 2-3 year olds all came cycling at us on their little tricycles, dressed identically and all seem to be called José-Luis!! The nursery held about 40 cots, each with a baby of about 18 months or younger, but they only had one tiny teddy in their with them. They went bizerk when we walked in and started laughing and yelling at us, one little girl was jumping up and down in her cot as soon as we paid her a little attention.
we later went to the outside pool, although you wouldn't know it by the colour of the water, but all went in fully clothed. Was hilarious and even the main nun was joining in the fun. Beccy, the other volunteer living with me, and myself tried teaching the girls how to swim the butterfly, was so funny, but I couldn't remember how to say butterfly (the shame Mr Wood!!), that we re-named it the bird!!
The whole day was a bit of an eye opener to be honest, these children have nothing, but yet seem so happy with the little they do have. Some of them don't even know how old they are as they were left on the doorstep when they were younger. A little boy who they named Jefferson, is known among the staff as Jefferson no name, coz he was abandoned at the gates when he was days old. It really is sad, but then to see the smiles on their faces when you play a simple game of 'catch'with them just goes to show how material things really are not important!!
Classes start straight away tomorrow at 9am, so its in at the deep end. Can't wait for it all to begin, although I still donñt think its sunk in that I'm here for three months!!!
Lots of love to everyone, and hope to hear from you all soon!!
