We were happy to escape Porto Alegre and are now staying in a hostel outside of Foz do Iguacu, the nearest town to the Iguazu falls. The hostel is lovely despite being overrun by english tourists but we have a pool and hammocks and it is very green here, as is Brazil in general. On Friday when we arrived we went to see the falls from the Brazilian side and from there you can get a general overview of the falls. They are absolutely huge and unless you´re in a helicopter you can´t see them all in one go. We went on a ´safari´ which involved a ride in a truck through the forest where we saw huge spiders, thousands of butterflies and coatis which are like raccoons and are very mischievous! Plus a short walk and then a boat trip on a motorised rib around the falls and into one of the tamer parts just to make sure we got thorougly wet! There are also loads of trails so you can see the falls closer up. Yesterday we saw the falls from a whole new angle from the Argentinian side which was phenomenal as the walkways go over the top of the waterfalls so you can look straight down them and then right down to the bottom so you can see them from below and get sprayed again. The best bit was the last walkway we did which traversed the river at the top of the falls (which took about 10 mins just to get halfway across the river which give an indication of how wide it is!) and then stops at the top of the strongest, most raging waterfall known as the devil´s throat and the force of the water causes the spray to jet constantly into the sky from where it crashes down below. We stood there for ages mesmerised as it was so incredible and we were almost within touching distance of the water. Obviously I took loads of photos but haven´t had a chance to upload them yet! Having seen the falls we are now spending some time at the hostel by the pool as it´s quite expensive just to got into the park to see the falls so we can´t really do it again. In a couple of days we´re off to the Pantanal where hopefully we´ll see lots of wildlife and maybe even a jaguar if we´re lucky!

Lucy Hi Alice - glad you're having lots of fun. I'm so jealous. I remember horseriding with no saddle or helmet and fishing for paranas in the pantanal - health and safety, what is that?! Have the best time sweetie. It's snowing here!
