Crystal blue glacier lakes, snow capped mountains and undulating hills were the views that greeted us on arrival to el calafete, the gateway to Argentine Patagonia.
We decided to go to Patagonia after a few travellers and blogs raved about it. Considering our lack of hiking experience (can you count PGL when I was 11?) we were a little nervous but very excited all the same.
El calafete is known for the nearby Perito Merino glacier in Los Glaciers national park roughly an hour out of the town. The glacier is unique in that it is actually still growing and as a result large chunks of the glacier often dislodge and fall to the ooohs and aaahs of sightseers. The park looks onto the glacier with windy wooden paths leading the way to fantastic and relatively up close viewpoints. Once there we took in the view in awe and were lucky enough to hear some of the glacier fall into the water, a surprisingly loud sound.
After taking it in and the obligatory selfie we heading back to el calafete. There really isn't much to do there except the glacier and a few outdoor shops so we only stayed for a couple of days. Next up is El Chalten, the main hiking destination of Argentine Patagonia, god help us.
