After the luxury of shopping malls and far too much junk food we felt the need to get active again, so headed to the coast for some world class waves. We stayed in a little place called Playa Trunco mostly populated by tourists and "surfer duuuuudes", and were excited to get a board and take it out for the next day. Unfortunatly the beach itself was pretty rubbish for anything other than throwing rocks (not that we did, its just there were lots of them) and collecting shards of broken beer bottles (ditto). Seeing as our version of surfing amounted to half an hour of furious paddling to reach waves which, up close, caused actual terror, followed by gymnastically accomplished displays of uncoordination, our attention was held for only a day.
p.s I know the words gymnastic and uncoordinated seem to contradict one another in that description, but its amazing the ways limbs can bend when you forget which way is up.
So another long bus journey took us to the very north of El Salvador to a small town called La Palma, which is famous as the hometown of artist Fernando Llort. His work comes under the genre naive art, a title refering to the bold use of colour and simple outlines, as opposed to his actual view of the world (like many others he was influenced by politics and the war). The town itself was so lovely, covered with replicas and translations of his style, a really cool place to spend a day or so. But as they say, thats all we had time for folks, and so before we knew it another country and another adventure beckoned.
