Managing to get back into Colombia without incident we caught a bus up to the coastal town of Riohacha. Now that we are out of the mountains it has been getting seriously hot and we felt a beach was definately in order. Riohacha was nice enough for a couple of days but the beach wasn't too clean and there was little else to do in the town. Also the cat calls and creepy looks Alice received whenever she was out on her own were getting annoying. It was the first place that had happened so far and was the only time we've had trouble with people out here.
From Riohacha we headed to Taganga, a little village next door to Santa Marta. Taganga was cool and we stayed there for a few days just relaxing on the beach and enjoying the view from our hotel room (less than ten feet to the sea!). The village's beach would have been nice except for the suspect brown items floating in the water so instead we walked around the corner to another bay, Playa Grande, which was much cleaner. We also contemplated going to Tayrona national park but as we both had serious sun burn and travel fatigue we decided to just laze around where we were! The first evening we were there the skies opened and the biggest lightning storm we'd ever seen raged over head. Every few minutes a flash of lightning would light up the whole place and the crash of thunder was deafening. It was very cool! Unfortunately it did lead to a power cut and consequently an impossible night's sleep without a fan to cool the room. We also took a trip to Aracataca, Gabriel García Márquez's home village, to be all cultural like. After an hour on the bus we got there to find that it was a pretty drab little village and his old house, the museum, was closed and being refurbished. Seeing us looking a bit disappointed outside one of the builders on the site dragged us inside so we could look around the construction site. We were slightly confused, as were all the other builders, but I guess it was a sweet gesture. Anyway, next stop Cartagena...
