So I lie, I'm no longer in Mexico. But I was a few hours ago.
Went down for the weekend with the intention of helping out with the health fair a sister church of ours, La Vina, was holding. Lacking in medical skills and Spanish knowledge, I don't know how much help I was but I did have fun hanging out with the gorgeous l'il kiddies. Los ninos son mucho bonitas.
Was stoked to find out how similar Spanish is to French, meaning even though I could speak very little, it wasn't so hard to comprehend written texts because of the similarities in vocab. Discovered it's also a very easy language to pick up, and much easier than say, Thai, to pronounce!
Our host mum spoke little English and only one of the three other girls I stayed at her place with spoke good enough Spanish to hold a decent conversation. It could potentially have been a real frustration, but a youth pastor there said something which really rang true with me: "Even if you've crossed a border, even if you've got different colour skin, even if you speak a different language, if the Spirit's there, it's automatic family ... 'cause what Jesus did knows no boundaries." And that's something that's been proved me time and time again as I travel.
Despite the obviously lower standard of living there - it's amazing the very visible difference just across the border - the people are really generous, with kids coming up to us at the fair, giving us food and gifts of pictures they'd coloured for us, our host mum shouting us dinner, and just the warmth they showed us.
I'd definitely love to go back.
