This morning I left mum and Fenton behind in Kilifi and I caught the bus down the coast to Mombasa then inland to Nairobi. The bus left at 9:00AM and arrived in the big city around 7:00PM, so it was a long trip but disappointingly unadventurous. After hearing so much about the infamous roads and buses, I was expecting something much more disastrous... something like Fenton's journey in which the bus left four hours late, got a puncture, replaced it with the spare, got another puncture, had no spare tyre left to replace it with so Fenton flagged down another passing bus and arrived into Nairobi at 1:00AM, and reached the airport about ten minutes before his flight was about to leave. Not sure how he made it on board, but he did!
The roads are a little rough, lots of potholes and part of the main road is simply dirt, but we got there OK - I even got some sleeping in so it can't have been that bad.
At the bus depot - where I waited for an hour before we left - I met Mary, a lovely Kenyan woman who has visited New Zealand before. She's a Christian too and turned out to be such a Godsend in so many ways: checking I was doing OK at the mid-way stop, offering to meet me somewhere from where we can go to church together on Sunday, telling me which stop to get off at and even sharing the taxi she'd ordered as her house was somewhere past the youth hostel. This city's not the safest place to be at night, as evidenced by the guard at the locked gates to the youth hostel drive who checks who you are before letting you in, so it really was such a blessing to have her and her husband with me.
