Another early start and a long drive north to Port Douglas with a very pretty church and then on up the Cook Highway, On the way up we stopped at Mossiman Gorge lots of shutes and rapids filling up fast because of all the rain. Next stop was the insect museum and the place for lunch, with a cystal clear pool right in the middle of a forest that was 114 million years old..at least! Shared my swim with a couple of turtles and some fish. After lunch it was on to the Daintree river where we went on a boat ride spotting crocs! We saw 3, Jack, the big daddy of the area and then a young one and a baby... Lots of gory tales of children being snatched etc and warnings to keep our hands and feet inside the boat!!
Cape Tribulation was next. ..the place where Captain Cook first set foot in Australia. ..There were many signs warning you about crocodiles on the beaches..what with the stingers and the crocodiles, swimming off the beach is a bit of an extreme sport in Australia! !
The beach was a wide expanse of silver sand bounded by mangroves...it really is where the rainforest meets the sea. Walking long the beach I spotted the smazing patterns that the tiny sea crabs make in the sand..is it where the Aborigines first got their patterns for their paintings?
It doesn't take much imagination to see patterns and pictures in the sand.
From Cape Tribulation we went to Marjee Swamp, a haven for creepy crawlies and things that bite. Fascinating to see the mangroves that can exist in a saltwater environment..we saw snakes and fish and lots of very big spiders. We were all coated in insect repellent.. the sandflies are notorious!! As a reward for intrepid exploring we went to the Flora Villa where the owners make the best organic biodynamic ice cream...lots of interesting flavours...I tried the orange and lime marmalade, but everything looked amazing.
A long drive home with a short stop at Alexander Point to looking down to where the Daintree river meets the sea in the middle of a vast mangrove swamp.
On the road today saw lots of signs warning of Cassowarys crossing..but we didnt see any!

JackieChadwick and Bill hi, sounds al very exciting, and a lot warmer than where we are. Very cold and snowy in Nothumberland. And watched owls hunting and visited lots of castles. Walked in deep snow to see ancient rock carvings . Not quite as dangerous as crocs and insects.
