Since leaving Broken Hill and crossing the SA border (where we had to give up any fruit & veges), we have stayed at a couple of interesting free camps along the way at Terowie and 'Worlds End'! Lots of railway history here and old heritage towns now looking more like 'ghost' towns unfortunately. We didn't spot any 'axe murderers' either, Fred!! Peterborough was also a nice old heritage town with 'Bob the Railway dog' as their mascot (apparently he used to ride on top of the trains in the 1800's). Fuel has been a lot cheaper here too - down to $1.16!
We were excited to renew our 30 year friendship with Steve & Vicki Gregor and share their wonderful home while exploring the Barossa and Clare Valley regions nearby, as well as a day trip to see the 'city of churches', Adelaide! We visited the Maggie Beer Farm Shop for my belated birthday lunch treat and had a free cooking demonstration as well! Hopefully I can put those new cooking skills to the test on our travels. There is a lot to see and do in this area including wineries, antique shops, cafes, etc. We drove past the Harbig tree where a family lived for 5 years, and strolled through the vast collection of vehicles at the National Heritage Museum at Birdwood. Kapunda too has a wonderful mining history - a great little town.
We've had a great time at Steve & Vicki's place, enjoying their home grown fruit and hospitality, a day trip to the Murray River (on a 40 degree day!), a competitive game of Bocce on Vicki's bowling green and chilling out sharing old stories, our love of outback travel and our families. What a blessing to have good friends! From here we plan to head across to the Eyre Peninsula - a new place to explore!
