"As we hurtled down the motorway" would be an extremely inappropriate way of starting this blog because we did no such thing. We started off our day far to early for a holiday at 6am when our wake up call arrived. As I shuffled out of bed at 6:35am I realized to things 1) I better get a move on and 2) today was going to be bloody boiling. I was right about both things as I only just made the bus to take us to our destination and the temperature reached 39 degrees today (apparently). Our destination was the Isle of Capri, made famous in really old movies and songs (once again, apparently) and also for the Capri pants (yep they are actually from here). We made the 25 minute boat trip from Sorrento and were presented to our guide who could only be described as the typical older Italian man stereotype. He had greying hair slicked back and the sides where slightly whiter, he had almost a pencil moustache and a deep brown tan. His nature was suave and sophisticated but you knew in his day (and maybe still now) he was a devil with the ladies. He proceeded to take us around the island on minibuses until we were not allowed to drive any more and then we got off and walked the rest. Here are some facts about Capri: it is 4 miles end to end and about 2 miles wide at the widest part. The highest point is the too of Monte Solare (sun mountain) which is 589 metres tall. We ended up taking a chairlift (essentially a garden chair on piece of wire) to the top. I never thought I could sit so still while clinging onto this chair for dear life. It's fair to say I was to petrified to enjoy the amazing views (Sally tells me) and lovely scenery (Sally also tells me). Coming down wasn't as bad but the only movement was to stop my newly purchased hat from leaving my head for the side of the mountain. On an unrelated topic I got the coolest t shirt yesterday, can't wait to show you all. We then went and saw the Venetian Steps, the 964 steps you had to climb to get from te harbour to the village of Anacapri. It was also one of the first staircases in the world. Then we took a boat around the island to see all the little grottoes and famous people's houses that live here (the president of Ferrari, Swarovski, Sophia Loren, whoever owns Dolce & Gabbana and a host of others) or who have lived here (Mussolini, Churchill, Harry S. Truman, some English singer called Gracie Fields, most of which were during world war 2, Emperor Tiberius etc). But finally after 6 or so hours of sightseeing we finally got to do what we all wanted to do, go swimming! And boy was it worth the wait. The water was so blue and clean but the beaches are just rocks but we had a lovely little 20 minute swim before we headed back. We then hit Sorrento for dinner which was lovely. I promise more photos will be up soon, we just have to find enough time to sit and do it really. Alrighty, talk soon.
