Day 13
There were many reasons Colin chose to do this tour on motorbike; his love of riding the bike obviously was the primary reason but also because on bike you can experience so much more of the countryside that you are travelling through.
Today we could smell the harvesting of the hay, the mowing and the earthy smell of the soil as it was ploughed. We travelled for miles through the national forests of both Lithuania and Poland, the scent of pine and the forest floor is something that can't be artificially recreated. As we travelled through the forests the light playing through the trees gave the glades a magical appearance.
The ride today although wasn't much longer than other days, it felt much longer and hotter because we were on smaller roads and couldn't do the same speeds as we have been and also the roads were much busier in places with lots of lorries. We had a couple of lorries and cars overtaking with not quite as much room as I'd like!
Bialystok has retained it's centre core of palaces and churches but just to contradict what I wrote last night it is rebuilding in its former style with colour and flourish!
As we walked around we came across squares where large hosepipes had been attached to fire hydrants at one end and a garden sprinkler at the other; children and adults alike were enjoying running in and out getting drenched; tiny tots stripped down to nappies and undies were squealing with delight- obviously there's no shortage of water here. We do hope the trend doesn't catch on in England as seeing the majority of Northwich girls in wet tshirts isn't a good outlook. Colin however enjoyed most of the sights here!
We went our for our evening meal to a German beer house, which struck us as odd given the history between the 2 nations; Colin enjoyed his litre of beer and the fact that the entire meal cost less than £17.
We have had a couple of spectacular thunderstorms whilst here, I'm hoping that they blow over during the night.
