We arrived in Bergen yesterday only slightly damp!
The day then turned into blue skies and quite warm. Our Best Western Hotel is the least impressive, with the smallest room we've had so far, typical as we are here for two nights! However the up side is it has underfloor heating in the bathroom; which has meant that all the clothes we washed yesterday are now drying well,
Bergen is still a working harbour with cruise ships arriving, as they take the fjord tours and also huge trawlers. In total we saw just 4 trawlers but each one was the size of a cross channel ferry or bigger; they dwarfed the naval coast guard ships. Looking at them we could quite understand how a fleet of these could easily take all of the fish from 1 part of the ocean in 1 fell swoop.
As with all of the places we tend to visit, there is only a very small portion of interesting buildings or sights to see and Bergen is no different. Having said that the painted wooden shops and houses are quintessentially Norwegian and extremely picturesque.
When we were travelling through Eastern Europe last time, we were lucky enough to come across food markets. Here we could choose to eat and drink from a wide variety of local foods. Colin was delighted to find one here at the harbour which was full of seafood.
Not being able to eat much, down to a mouth and throat infection, I stuck with a very boring prawn sandwich but Colin went with a mixed seafood salad which he said was great. We were expecting the bills for our food and drink to be excessive so to pay just £25 was great. I'm sure over the stay it will even out.
After 5 days of feeling ill, we bit the bullet and spent the morning at the local medical practice, where we were efficiently seen and tested by a French doctor, who impressed us with his ability to translate from his native tongue into English and then write up his notes in both Norwegian and English.
After takin some antibiotics I slept the rest if the day away and Colin went to visit the aquarium. He was interested to see what his tea tonight looked like before it got to him!!
