Well I have some time to fill in the last chunk before me trip ends and I'm officially "at home" whilst I wait for the baggage to be sewn out (Manchester is officially the slowest airport although I whizzed through customs because of sublime seat placement choice on my part and having an electronic passport! I also think I came off the plane with some of the Icelandic football team but i think they were anxious about playing in hot weather because hey all looked miserable!
Last night me and Erin went out on the 'Vick after I spent the day traversing the centre of the country to see some more of the beauty whereas Erin flew over it. It was really sunny and I planned my sleep patterns suitably. ie I saw there were only boring bits until we stopped in the middle of Iceland and I faced the fact that there would be sleeping on this bus. So I snoozed away.
When we stopped we were in the middle of nowhere. We had a panoramic view of ... Well, not much except rocks and a mountain in the distance. But is was peaceful. the perfect place to become one with the world. But I did t want to become one with the world right then so I hopped back on the bus. As we kept going we drove along a glacier which was surreal and impressive. The thing about Iceland is that it is stunning but in a wider way than the verticality of Nz's beauty. It is on 2 plates which are moving away from each other by 2cm a year! Other sights today included an awesome waterfall, cabins by a gorgeous winding river and the original town of the Geysir that gave geysers their name!
Last night before going on a bar hunt in the famed Reykjavik nightlife (not so live on a Tuesday but we found a neat place with an outdoor sofa and view of the Square in 12 pm daylight-My equivalent of late bight sunbathing Chris and Ann) we went to the circus. However the only thing left on at the circus when we got there was a Pain Show. There were beds of nails, lightbulb chewing, needles through skin, standing on machetes and stapling tips to their bodies! But only a bit of blood... I cringed a lot more than I thought and actually felt queasy afterwards, Erin was very amused!
Graffiti is somewhere between a problem and the beauty of Reykjavik. It was funky and clean (as in not rude or crass, it is hard to imagine clean graffiti). You see it when you look up the side streets and on the backs of buildings. The city is a fun place to explore.
