After only 1 hour on the bus from Rotorua we pulled up into Tauranga city centre to see Jack waiting to greet us. It was a short walk to our hostel where Jack had booked us into his room for 2 nights. Having chilled out for a little while and eaten some dinner - that jack kindly made us with his own hands (yes, suprisingly enough he can cook) we all showered and got ready to sample the delights of a night out on the banging Tauranga strip.
We went to a few bars and pubs, I had a few too many so the boys brought me back to the hostel, waited for me to go to sleep so they could go sneak back out, it took a bit longer than they thought...lets just say it had something to do with a top bunk, a mattress going first and an avacado???? I eventually fell asleep and the lads went back out to finish the night off!
The following morning all feeling pretty worse for wear we got up and decided the best hangover cure would be to jump in a freezing cold river or be bounced into it from 'THE BLOB'- so we headed to Waimarino, Bethlehem (yes, there is a place called Bethlehem in NZ) We arrived after a short bus ride and walk to Waimarino which is an adventure park based on the side of a river where you can kayak, go off diving boards, slides, rope swings and the Blob. We decided to go on the water slide first, Jack and Al went down first on mats and made it look like so much fun, so off I went, but as I went over the little jump I jarred my back so didnt enjoy it as much as the boys, next they went down on kayaks. We had to wait a while for the main attraction to open 'THE BLOB' so made full use of all the other facilities. When the time came we donned our helmet and life jackets - which instantly assured me how dangerous it was going to be. The blob is basically a large pillow on the water partially inflated - 1 person sits on the end nearest the water while 1, 2 or even 3 people jump off a high platform onto the other end and bounce the person sitting nearest the water into the air! sooo much fun (see videos). After we'd worn ourselves out at Waimarino we decided to head to the beach, it was really nice to chill out after such a hectic morning and the beach was really nice, I sunbathed and took a few photos while Alex and Jack were getting wiped out in the waves! hahaha.
After the beach we sat and had a drink in the last bit of sun before heading back to the hostel to prepare for another night out in Tauranga!
We bought a few drinks to have before we went out because last night proved to be a tad expensive. So we decided to play a bit of table tennis while having a few drinks and it turned out quite competitive, with Alex and Jack taking it a bit too seriously, they invited another competitor - obviously I wasnt good enough. So Elizabeth (not Lizzy or Beth, just Elizabeth) from Australia steps up. She was a little strange but nice enough, until Alex invited her out with us....she doesnt drink or doesnt really like people who drink - bearing in mind we were going out for drinks this was a bit awkward! And she dressed like Terri Irwin?!?! Anyway she soon got bored of all the partying and made her way back to the hostel a whole 45mins after we went out. We carried on and ended up in a bar with a live band which was pretty cool, then we made friends with 2 Mauri guys who were out for a friends birthday but don't usually drink... 10 minutes later Al and Jack were teaching them how to do bottle bongs. 9 bottle bongs later Jack and Alex were in next door cubicles huging the toilets, throwing up! hahaha. We called it a night after that because we had to be up early to catch the bus back to Rotorua.
Good times and great to see where Jack will be spending the next 6 months.
