In 1270 Edward 1st spent three months in Aigues Mortes whilst he awaited the arrival of his fleet. It is believed he copied the idea for the donjon tower from here for the 1st castle he built in Wales at Flint starting 1277.
Evidence suggested some of the stone masons used at Flint were the same as those at Aigues Mortes.
In 1985 Alain Albaric a local historian came to Flint from Aigues Mortes to measure our donjon tower. With help from a French university confirmed that Flint Castles tower was the exact same dimension as its sister tower at Aigues Mortes. I do however believe our tower walls are thicker and are world record breakers.
A visit to this walled town is a must if you can. Beautiful at night and great for food.
