Well, the weather has not been our friend on this trip. We've had two days of sunshine - and scorching temperatures! - the rest have been rainy or overcast/drizzly (hell on the hair).
Heidelberg is one of the places where it drizzled or rained or even thundershowered the entire day.
Still, we made the most of it. The highlight of the town is the old castle - much of it in ruin from good ol' King Louis XIV. But it's still spectacular. It sits atop the town and the views from it are incredible. The photos show a lot more detail than I can describe here, except the photo of the world's largest wine barrel; it's hard to tell what this photo is, but it hold almost 50,000 gallons of wine! We were told that soldiers in the day were required to drink 1-liter a day, or were fined. Ha!
The town of Heidelberg is not what we were expecting. I guess over the years, thanks in part to those Himmel figurines, I'd romanticized the town and envisioned it very differently. Oh, there is some charm, for sure. But much is lost in the upkeep of it (felt dirtier than some of the other towns we've visited).
Luckily, we ended the day at a lovely outside table - in the square - and enjoyed a delightful beer and bretzle. Their table umbrellas ensured we didn't get soaked and we could still people watch!
