Day 5 - Living it up in Cannes
After a 90 minute planning session the night before - Jayne and I decided that getting to St Tropez was going to be too difficult and settled on catching a bus to Cannes. France has an awesome bus timetable online with maps showing where the bus stops are and times buses run on various days - only issue is it is all in French. Apparently from Seillans on a Saturday there is really only one time you can catch the bus to and from cannes and that is at 7am with return boarding at 6:15pm. Jayne was confident from the map she knew where the bus stop was and armed with our head lamps we trekked down to the bus stop (it is still pitch black at 7am and it felt like we were trekking in the middle of the night). We stopped at what we thought was the bus stop but it turned out to be a school bus stop so Jayne went further up the road to try and find the actual stop. We wandered around aimlessly until Jayne saw a bus and started screaming at me and we were both running around crazy arms flailing all over the place trying to flag down the bus. The bus driver must have thought we were crazy and took pity on us and stopped - we weren't even at a bus stop - we were his only passengers at that time of morning anyway. The bus trip took about an hour and a half to get there and we arrived about 8:30am - very early for Cannes. As I was getting of the bus I was more worried about saying merci and waving to the bus driver than concentrating on what I was doing - which resulting in me tripping down the stairs and me thinking I had broken my ankle. Once I got over the embarrassment my ankle actually wasn't sore and it was all good! We started walking through the dirty back streets of cannes and let me tell you that is not advised. We had random people yelling at us and the streets were dirty. Jayne at this point decided she hated Cannes and didn't know why we came. Anyway we realised that we were probably walking the wrong direction and headed the other way and found the beach and fancy shops. Cannes doesn't really seem to open until 10 so we sat in a coffee shop until then and watched as the rain started to pour down. We had highly inappropriate outfits on for the weather conditions as we thought we were going to be lying around at the beach - massive fail. Jayne also carried around a massive bag with her all day that had our swimmers and towels which we didn't get to use. But then the weather came good and we spent hours shopping with some very excellent purchases - like Jayne's Marc Jacobs bag. We stopped for lunch at some italian restaurant - all the restaurants around there seem to be italian for some reason and the guy serving us was crazy - first up he thought we were American, and then second he asked Jayne if we were sisters because we look exactly the same! We finished the afternoon off with some drinks in the Cannes Intercontinental. The sun had come out so we were appropriately dressed and our incompetent wait staff gave us free drinks. At this point Jayne declared she loved Cannes!
