Happy 4th of July everyone! I hope you got to see some great fireworks and enjoy this great holiday.
I started this morning off with my brother Andrew at the San Diego Zoo...if you haven't been there before it's a must see. From a very diverse animal population down to the exhibits that show them best, it was a great way to spend my first day here.
Afterwards, we packed up and headed to Ocean Beach Pier for some chill time and the fireworks show later that night. Wading the Pacific was enjoyable (you'd think it was much colder) until I managed to get salt water into my eyes (ouch!)...I'll check out another part later this week for some tentative snorkeling. The firework show was cool but it's got nothing on what is put on back home. The main attraction for me is the sunset...ahhh.
Oh yeah, apparently it's tradition to take part in the marshmallow fight that follows the fireworks. If any of my students are reading this, it was no where as fun as it could have been. Most of the people out there were good but the other majority were drunks, potheads, or otherwise just shady. Take into the consideration the crowd size and it's not really something I would rather deal with. Splitting up to get view spots, it took over an hour to locate each other in the crowd and about another hour to get out of there and headed back to my hosts.
A word about Ruben & Lara... They are awesome!! This is my home for the week thanks to their welcoming attitude...I thought that was something only the Houston CS crew had. Add in the fact their place reminds me of my own and I have no problem falling asleep, I actually had to remind myself this morning that I'm not in Houston anymore. They are from Spain but just moved here from Micronesia (they remind me of the Sex Lives of Cannibals couple...for the book club). Hopefully, we'll get to explore the city as a group, but I understand if that's not possible; relocating and settling in can take up a lot of time.

David (WanderQuest) Good to read your entries Amy. It was in San Diego three years ago that I said "What the hell!" and crossed the border into Mexico, sparking my wanderlust, which eventually led me to meeting you crazy Houston CSers. In the spirit of the last bit of advice always given to astronauts before liftoff ... "Don't forget to look out the window every once in a while." I hope you're enjoying the hell out of this! :o)
