Helllloooo All!!!
Wow!! Just got back from Fraser Island 6pm last night. What a week it has been.......
Ok so left Noosa on the Monday afternoon at 1300 4.5 hour journey! Luckely we had air con on the bus!! yeeha
So set off up the road, passed rainbow beach etc but not much else on the way.
Arrived in Hervey bay at 1800 and got a pick up to the palace hostel where i was staying!!
we had some mad Kiwi driving us back to the hostel but he def got us all in the mood for a night out...
Once we got back to the hostel we had to sort everything out for fraser island the following day so it was $50 for fuel/camping costs etc/$55 for deposit on the 4X4 jeep and about $25 for food for the next 3 days!...... once i got into my room 4C i sorted all my stuff out for fraser, we could only take a small bag as the big suitcases(or what i call my body bag - its massive)wouldnt fit in the jeep!! So much to my disgust i had to leave my hairdryer, hair straighteners, shampoo/conditioner/makeup and any clothes i might remotely look nice in as there wasnt going to be any power points and all my clothes would get covered in sand.... oh and no mobile..... after this depressing thought i decided to go with the group to go and get some booze for that evening and the trip!!! So i bought 4L Goon!! mmmmmmmmm
So me, Monika (german girl), and 2 english guys in our room whom had just come back from fraser island decided to have a few drinks on our balcony and then head out to the PUB!!! woohoo! So we went to a bar called Koala's and met up with the 3 irish guys i met in Noosa. had a few drinks then decided to head back to the hostel as it was going to be a really early start the following day ie 530am......
Soooooo..... me being me forgot my room key so i had to call the mental Kiwi guy (night manager/driver) whom only had a key for some of the rooms(NOT MINE) so he gave me his room key which was a double room!! woop! and he had to sleep in another single room. Felt bad but wasnt going to complain.....so we sat and chatted by the pool for a while then i headed to my bed..
Following morning i woke up at 430am and headed into the room i was suppose to be staying in and managed to get my stuff out and get showered and ready for Fraser....
we had a team briefing in the morning which consisted of a 20minute video on how to drive safely on Fraser and also what to do if you see dingo's!!! (wild dogs). From there we got put into 3 different groups of 8.
we were group 1 and in my group was:
sarah - from California lovely girl 22
Caz, Matt and Chigs -3 medical students from america brilliant guys all 23
louise and lisa - from Denmark both 20 really sweet girls
Rob - from England hilarious guy
Ok so that was my group, but the 3 groups decided to stick together for the 3 days. so met many amazing people from spain/france/america/sweeden/and supprisingly there were only 4 of us from the UK.... really nice to be around a mix of people.
So from the hostel we headed to the campshed which has all our camp gear/everything we could have needed... minus jump leads and a tyre pump which we found out later on.....
Loaded up the jeep - got to know each other and headed for our food shopping!
We then went to the barge to get our ferry across to Fraser Island (kingfisher bay) the ferry took around 30minutes.. started taking photo's from that point although it was a bit cloudy the view was amazing.
once we arrive at fraser Rob took on the first lot of driving so after our little talk from the palace tour guide befor we left we managed to get the car into 4wd and let the tyre pressure's down without any problems and headed onto the sandy island.....
we stopped at kingfisher to fill up water bottles and get any last minute bits and pieces then went inland to get across to the east side of the island...
the track was amazing - all sand however we were in the middle of a forest. already by this point we were all laid back around each other and having a laugh.
once on the east side of the island we drove north along the beach (just like in the picture) - we all jamp out the jeep and just stood there amazed. we all couldnt believe where we were it was gorgeous. we then headed to a place called Indian Head which was a hill overlooking the island. I cant describe how beautiful it was. the weather was gorgeous, the sea was a bluey/green colour and the sand sooo white. we all just stood there and were completely amazed...(by this point my camera battery had died-i have no idea why as it was charging the night before- so appologies for lack of pictures but the guys in the group are going to email me them so will get them up as soon as possible.....)
We walked back down the hill to see our first DINGO.....which i ran from and into the jeep....haha.
from there we headed to our first camping area south of Dundaburra......
Once we all eventually found somewhere to camp the 3 groups set up our tents and sorted out our dinner...First night was Burgers, steak, and sausages and there def wasnt any salad... the guys did the food shopping so all we had was meat no healthy food what so ever lol. But they did the cooking and it was awesome. That night we all decided to get stuck into the Goon (Red and white wine). It was such a cool night we spent most of it getting to know each other but there was 30 of us so was a long night.
But the goon soon took over and we were all chilling out on the beach.
That night me, sarah and rob shared a tent i swear it was like a sauna in there. so by the morning rob ended up sleeping in the jeep, Me sprawled out in the tent and sarah sleeping on the beach. so wasnt the best night sleep ever - but all part of camping right...
Then i decided i really needed the toilet.... and as there was no toilets/showers for miles we had to take a shovel and a roll of toilet paper and make our own toilet....soooooo after all the talk about dingo's and how they are dangerous (apparently they took a life of a 2 year old boy in 2003) so i was absolutly s***ting myself....however i went and never seen a dingo, phew....but i swear i have never seen so many fly's in my life.....(the sand flys are the size of our queen bees back home... massive. and the bite - b*****s.....
That morning once we all got packed again we headed to the champagne pools - by this point we all needed a wash/shower anything. (we wernt allowed to swim in the sea because of sharks/jellyfish). So we all litterely ran and jamp into the lake... it was a rock pool, waves from coming over the side of the pool, it was awesome. so we spent an hour or so there then headed back in the jeep to the coloured sands. (Formed by aboroginies)it was sand rocks, was cool.
Next stop was the old shipwreck (Maheno, a former trans-Tasman luxury liner and a World War 1 hospital ship. Today the ships rusted remains lie on the beach north of Happy Valley and are a popular attraction for visitors to the island.) bit of information for you there - arnt i good..... journal and actual facts go me.... Def a photographic spot.
From there we went to Lake wabby which is a massive sand dune. It was probably a 40 minute hike to the sand dune... the dune was huge and a killer to walk on. but at the bottom of the dune was the most beautiful lake you have ever seen wow... so we ran down the hill and jamp into the lake and i tell u the water was hot..... got this place is spectactular......
we then decided we needed to head to our next camp spot... (I drove this time) and absolutly love it..... we were only allowed to drive on the beach at certain times because of the tide so we needed to find our camp before 3pm...
Next site was better than first however it had signs on most trees saying dingos rome this area.... but like i said i handelled the toilet run so nothing can go wrong right.....hmmmm
So yet another night of good food, goon and chilling out on the beach, dance routines and NO dingos woohoo!!!
Next monring i was time again to do the dingo run (toilet run) so me and my shovel headed to the bush....next thing i saw a dingo..... but i was cool just began to walk slowely back to camp however a further 4 turned up..... jeeeees i crapped myself.... threw the shovel and walked quickly back to camp - half laughing half nearly crying lol!!!
That morning me and sarah headed down to the beach for some much needed tanning...... as we woke up at like 5am......
On our way back to the jeep to get breakfast we found rob in the back covered in Red what we thought was blood (down his face/arm and all over his t-shirt.... we woke him up to find out if he was ok - me and sarah thinking he had been eaten by dingo's or something... however he just informed us that it was red wine and that he had been sick all down himself and in the JEEP!!!!! So poor rob with the worst hangover ever had to clean the jeep out before anyone stepped in it lol!!!
From then we went to lake mackenzie on the inland road yet again a gorgeous lake blue blue water and white sand. perfect place to sun bathe/play socker and swim.... wow....
It funny reading back on this as all i seem to have said is wow, amazing, gorgeous, awesome but truthfully its difficult to describe it anyother way....
From then we headed back to the barge to get our ferry back to reality..... We all did have such a laught, singing our wee hearts out in the back of the jeep, running from dingos, meat no salad, dance routines, i really did love my fraser family they were awesome.......
So we arrived back at the hostel once we dropped off our camping stuff about 6ish - once showered. we got pizza from the hostel and we all sat and laughed about the past few days....However i then had to head to get the overnight bus to airlie beach left at 8am for a long long night on the bus with yet again not much sleep........
Fraser island is by far the best thing i have done so far it was absolutly an eye opener....
