October 18th Now, time for some celebration! The fireworks were going crazy and
more of an up-close-and-personal 4th of July. Sitting on the second floor and
looking over the balcony, the fireworks (of the biggest size there are) are
going off from the floor below and then exploding /right/ in front of my face!
They were directed over the Ganges only a stone's throw away and some of the
sparks came dangerously close to joining me on the balcony. Best fireworks ever
- it was a ton of fun!
During the day I wandered the city along and bought a pomello for breakfast and
started walking to Ram Jhula when a group of 8 monkeys started my way! One of
the tallest started reaching out for my pomello bag and I tried to lift if out
of its reach, but he was much taller on his hind legs than I would have
imagined and nabbed the second half... I wasn't about to argue with a
potentially rabies-infested animal so I just laughed and went on my merry way.
October 19th Diwali goes on forever and the Indian tourists are decidedly more
obnoxious than foreigners. There's literally a flood of people since they bring
their entire extended family and everything seems instantly more crowded and
chaotic. I sincerely hope that Tuesday will bring this gentle town back to the
way it was when we got here.
We also chose a less expensive and more communal-living styled hotel to save
money so I can buy all the gifts I want! Everything here is incredibly cheap,
but it all adds up rather quickly. Anyway, I always wanted to know what it
would have been like to live in the 60s and now I'm sharing a squat toilet with
20 dread head hippies that have nightly jam sessions that go till midnight.
October 20th Today I'm scouting out yoga places and the majority of them are
pretty boring and not very challenging, but I found an AMAZING class that's
held on the beach of the Ganges and the teacher has already improved my poses
to where I can do stuff I didn't think I could /ever/ do! I think It will take
at least a day for my body to recover from the shock.
October 21st AND I'm sore as all get out. I can barely walk and Nate was
surprisingly sympathetic and offered to go out with me to grab bananas for
breakfast to help my muscles recover. At night we saw our first ghostly holy
man - wearing nothing but a chalky white paint all over and a strip of cloth
literally 4 inches wide and 3 feet long - holding a three pronged ornate spear
that was just as tall as he was.
October 22nd We ran into TJ! Complete coincidence brought us to Ram Jhula the
day he returned from his hike through the valley. His trip sounded pretty
awesome, especially spending a night with an Indian family and learning their
cooking recipes. That night we also had a reality check for how tiny the city
we're staying is when the power for the entire area shut down and everything
went black in the blink of an eye. Creepy, but also really cool.
