Hello from Tennant Creek. We were only going to stay one night but after putting up the tent decided we couldn't be bothered taking it down in the morning so we are here for 2 nights.
We have arrived in Tennant Creek during the Desert Harmony Festival and so join in the celebrations. Mark and William go to the free community breakfast which has everything from sausages and eggs to muffins, juice, nuts and raisins etc... Emily falls asleep just as we arrive so I wait in the car with her. In the afternoon we lather on sunblock, put on our hats and head to the market day/music festival at Mary Ann Lake. Emily sleeps.
It is a terrific experience. We eat some yummy multi-cultural food (not exactly traditional) - pork buns, spring rolls and some fluorescent green sago (don't let the colour put you off)! Some aboriginal ladies are cooking kangaroo tails in the coals of a fire. Mark would love to taste them but they are a long way off being ready. (These tails are the closest we have come to a kangaroo on this trip).
We watch an aboriginal man fashioning a boomerang out of a tree branch. We are interested to hear that the Aboriginals in this part of the Northern Territory don't use didgeridoos and never have. I guess sometimes we forget there are many different tribes.
The music is good. We listen to a father and daughter sing but we only stay for a couple of hours as the kids give us various non verbal signs they are ready to leave!
Later we head to Jacksons Bar for a pre dinner drink. They have a fire roaring despite the weather outside. Apparently they have one every day!
We have loved camping in the warm weather and sitting outside at night after the kids go to sleep. Mark has set up the stove and is loving cooking next to the tent. Oh, warm weather we do love you!
