Music
I think everyone is a musician in Freo or at least can play the guitar which explains the never ending stream of live music flowing through every corner of the town. Music is huge in Australia and everyone is very loyal to Australian bands, especially the townies of course, but they also listen to music from all over the world equally…the best of the US plus London, France, New Zealand, and more. In the past couple weeks I have heard of multiple concerts and festivals every weekend just in Perth, Fremantle and the Margaret River area, it's amazing. The first weekend I was in Freo I heard an energetic local singer named Matt Gresham rip up some bluesy/reggae tunes on his acoustic guitar while beating the rhythm on any available surface. An incredible show for $10…then I went home and bought his album on itunes! Sitting on the front porch, the smell of a smoldering charcoal grill, listening to "And the Boys" on repeat, later Mumford & Sons serenaded me into sunset…some of my favorite Australia moments so far. This weekend I am going to a music festival in Bussleton featuring Fat Freddy's Drop, they are supposed to be really good, reggae/dub music…I'm excited. In the past few weeks I've been in Australia I've definitely developed some new favorite bands and singers and I can't wait for more amazing concerts! Here is a list of the bands I've found so far...listen to them, enjoy!
Matt Gresham - Live Album -Blues/Folk
Mumford and Sons - Sigh No More - Rock (Dave Matthews-ish)
Angus and Julia Stone - Self Title Album & And the Boys Single - Folk (strange/ethereal sound…really cool)
Belle & Sebastian - The Life Pursuit & The Boy with the Arab Strap - Folk/Alternative
Fat Freddy's Drop - Reggae/Dub
