Hello again, hello!
So I never wrote back from when I finally arrived back home, but that was so long ago now, all you need to know is I'm home. But I am writing about my recent travels…to Austin TX. I had never been to Texas, so I bought a ticket to see Kelley (one of my roommates from Perugia).
Sunday, May 17th, I flew from Boston to Austin (with a connection in Houston) and Kelley met me at the airport. We walked the drag (and saw the drag rats) getting starbucks on the way of course and walked some of the UT campus. Afterwards, we hung around at her apartment until dinner time. We met Mel and Andrea at Guerro's taco bar where I had a chalupa. Then we went to Amy's for some ice cream. Later that night, Kelley and I went to Caine and Abel's for a drink with Mel and Mandy…to sadly watch the Celtics lose.
On Monday, we woke up early and went to Einstein's Bagels for breakfast. They are well known, yet we don't have them in Boston. Bought some sunscreen at CVS and then canoeing on Town Lake. The views were beautiful. For lunch we went to Whole Foods…it was enormous. Then we took a much needed nap. After that, we met Katie and Tess at the Waterloo ice house for a margarita before heading to Kelley's mom's house for dinner. She had made us chicken and dumplings, a specialty. Mom and Bob were very lovely and dinner was great. We watched Gossip Girls while eating Texas sheet cake and Blue Bell Ice cream (and some coffee). While at Kel's home I also met Kitty FINALLY. we spent the rest of the night in her apartment testing our brains on sporcle.com.
Tuesday morning Kelley had to work, so I woke up later. We had lunch with Andrea at blue star cafeteria and then to starbucks which eventually led to nap time. After nap, Kelley and I got in Andrea's car again and went to Barton springs fora swim and some sun. I showered and we went to taco cabana (fast food) for dinner with Katie, Mel and Andrea before the movies. We went to the Alamo to see Can't Hardly Wait. The Alamo plays old movies and has quote alongs depending on the night, it also serves food and drinks during the showing. At night we got drinks with Kel's roommate and then went to Trudy's well Mel and her RA friends. I fell in love with the Mexican martini.
Wednesday again we woke up late and eventually went for a run around town lake. It was hot, but beautiful. For lunch we went to Green Mesquite for some BBQ. Seeing as I had never been that south before, I had ALL of the above- fried okra, hush puppies, brisket, ribs, and pulled pork. We did a little shopping and then met Julia, Kelley's sister, at Embellish for pedicures. At night we went to see an 80s cover band, called the Spazmatics with Katie, Tess, Mel, Hannah, Brittany, and Katie. Kelley had her first tequila shot with me. After, Kelley and I went to QUA and danced on top of a floor that had sharks swimming under it. SO COOL. Then we did a little of sixth street…which I was quite impressed with. Much later in the night we went to Kerbys for fish tacos to end the night right. Everytime you eat in texas, apparently you always have chips and queso. But hey, I don't hate it.
On Thursday, we went to eastside for lunch. Eastside is a small restaurant that reminds me of a tea room. They grow most of their ingredients in their garden, and their chicken enchiladas were very good. We also had corn muffins, rice and beans, and an ice tea. We then walked up a small hill for some site seeing over these gorgeous houses. It was quite romantic if I do say so myself. We met up with Julia again, this time for frozen yogurt. They have these neat frozen yogurt bars in Austin where you sever yourself soft serve yogurt and put any topping on it and charge you by weight. I would highly recommend the original tart topped with mangoes, kiwis, strawberries, and chocolate chips. And the acai berry . After relaxing for a little bit at the apartment, we went to the spicy pickle for dinner and then to thundercloud to pick up a sub for the plane ride home. For my last night we went to Katies for a girls night of margaritas, snacks and catch phrase.
Friday morning Kelley drove me to the airport and I've been home since. Though it won't be long until my next journey. Till then, Angela
