Sunday, we had breakfast at mambo tango with the amazing coffee they made! Katy and Kelley went to the dali museum, and carson, alex, sara and I went exploring. We went to the park guell designed by gaudi. There were beautiful structures with mosaics and structures comprised of sandy colored stones. Then we walked to the two squares that marina told us to check out. We ate lunch in the second one. We split nachos, they had enchiladas, and I got a salad…and maybe a little too much sangria? Then we found the main shopping streets, where there was a STARBUCKS! I couldn't have been happier. So we got starbucks and sat outside and talked for a long while. It was good to get to know the girls better. Then we headed back to the hostel. We had dinner at a little indie place that had short tables, with pillows on the floor, higher tables, a raised bed, and all sorts of colors. we signed up for the night tour of Barcelona with toti, so me met back up at the hostel around 8:30. Toti took us on a two hour tour of barelona at night, the sights were beautiful, I wish I could have captured them better for you all. He told us about the history of Barcelona. Barcelona was once part of cataluyna, which explains why the people there still speak catalan, not Spanish. Spain conquered Barcelona and made it part of it, and would persecute people who spoke catalan, toti's grandfather being one of them. They were killed in the castle in some of my pictures. 40 years ago the dictatorship ended so they have been speaking catalan again. These people, and the basques who were also conquered by spain, want their independence and to be recognized as separate from spain, but because they are peaceful people, they have fought much against spain. After, katy and Kelley were hungry because they didn't eat dinner. So I went with them…because I can always eat, and we found a catalan restaurant. We asked the owner what was good, and he had us order authentic catalan food…and maybe too much catalan wine? Opps again, but this is spain, right? We had croquets, bruschetta things, catalan quiche, and very salty potatoes. And then we had vanilla, chocolate, and violet ice cream…that was interesting.
Monday the 19th, we again had breakfast at mambo tango and all went out together. We went to the cathedral that gaudi was building before he died, so it is unfinished. It was magnificent! A true work of art. And these women from new York heard us our accents and talked to us for a bit, they were so sweet. Then… we may have gone to starbucks (again)and then shopping? I may have bought a cardigan at zara? We had really bad paella and continued on. From a vendor we each bought a rope bracelet, they are our friendship bracelets with each other, we each got a different color, mine is orange. Katy and I were going to Madrid that night, so we had an early dinner of sapnish omelets …and maybe too much sangria? These glasses were huge and were 10 euro a piece…we found that out after we drank them. Then we walked, for lack of a better word, through the food market they had and bought some fruit. We all took a much needed nap back at mambo tango. Then katy and I packed up. We metroed to the train station, were we stood in 1 line, to stand in another line, to find out that we had to take a train from that station to the Barcelona sans station. We got to that station to stand in one line, to find out we had to stand in other line, where we missed buying the tickets for that night by 2 minutes, the 3 men infront of us were the last sale. The man behind the counter just said stop, done. This is what I get for traveling with katy Gilmore. Haha, but it was fine. The look on toti and marina's face when we came back to mambo tango was hilarious. We got dressed and found the girls at dinner, their faces were hilarious too. Barcelona night life is supposed to be amazing, so we went out. We went out to talk to 5 americans in a discotech, Fellini, where the skateboarders hung out…not exactly what we hoped Barcelona would be, but we made due. As long at the 6 of us are together, it's a good time because it's good people.
Tuesday morning, we had breakfast for the last time (tear) at mambo tango. Then we metroed to the train station, where we bought the wrong tickets that the guy let us sell back. We took a number and stood in a line, to figure out we needed to go to Barcelona sans (like katy and I did the night before) where we waiting in a line, then took a number, and bought the right tickets and waited for the train. Spain's transportation system is so confusing! Let this be a foreshadow.
