In Lima we were looking for options to get to Guyaquil in order to fly to the Galapagos from there and flying directly there was ridiculously expensive. After chatting with a guy at a hostel reception which we though may have travel desk but didnt suggested that we fly to the boarder and cross from there. We checked out those flights and true as bob turned out to be much cheaper than flights to Guyaquil direct. We booked the LAN flight and 4 hours later arrived at the airport to be told they cant find our ticket number so off we went to info which then explained as we are foreigners it would be $30 more per person. We ahd to buy it as the flight was going to leave soon and off we went to take our 7:40pm flight to Tumbes on the boarder of Peru.
Arriving 2 hours later (as apposed to 24hrs by bus) we exited Tumbes airport to be told that all the taxi's have been taken as it was a full flight. A random guy passed by and said he was going passed town anyway if we wanted to join. With this being our only feasible option we took it and started chatting. It turned out he was a multimillionaire that had a shrimp farm about hour and half away on the coast and had bungalows where we could stay. He invited us over, with none of us feeling unsafe or uneasy we agreed to join. Our bungalow was infront of an infinity sea water pool which was overlooking the beach and the sea. As we forgot to stop for dinner we went into the kitchen with a fridge full of deserts as it was easter weekend they had 60 people over and these were the left overs. So desert it was for dinner and ice cold Cuzquena's for midnight pool/sea side refreshment. With us all exhausted we retired for the evening.
7am start, a swim with this view was totally in order. As it was now Monday morning the cooks were back on duty and made us an amazing breakfast. By 9am the driver was ready to take us to the boarder. Certainly a night on a private beach and being chauferred for free to the boarder was something even beyond our conceivable dreams. However in saying that this whole trip had more than a few"I cant believe this is happening" moments.
Once at the boarder the driver refused payment or tip or any monitory sum. We got a moto taxi to the otherside which was now Ecuador but no boarder control in site. We were told to take a taxi which then took us to a building in the middle of no where which had both the Peru and Ecuador boarder control to get thee exit and entry stamp. Taxi took us back to the boarder town where we got a $7 bus to Guyaquil 5 hours away.
