A girl in my dorm room recommended visiting the Australia Museum so waking up not too early I found a lovely little café and ordered a truly English breakfast of English muffins and a pot of tea- loved it! Then got distracted my a shop selling socks for a dollar a pair, ended up going in there as I'd only brought two pairs on my travels forgetting I'd need a few for Australia. Found a pair of jeans for $10 and bought those too as again I'd only brought one pair of trousers out with me and the weather was much much cooler than I'd thought it would be at about 15oC. Bargainous store!
By the time I arrived at the museum it was midday, made use of my student id and discount and got myself into the museum at a fraction of the price. Saw my first wallaby (ok it was stuffed) and discovered the history behind Australia including the rather tragic events suffered by the stolen generation of aboriginals who were taken from their families between 1910-1970 and given to white families or the church to be 'educated'. Incredibly moving images and paintings by those affected. It was good to see all the Aussie stuffed birds and insects too as many I'd never seen before and unless I'm patient enough to sit and bird watch I'll probably never see!
After the museum I wandered into town and found the Rocks and some great little shops including a Guylian Belgian chocolate café that served hot chocolate made from slabs of Guylian chocolate it was heaven in a cup but made me feel ever so slightly sick from too much sugar! Found a vodaphone shop on George Street, the main shopping/business street in Sydney, and sorted out my mobile and got in touch with my friend Stan who lives in West Ryde. We arranged to meet up later on that evening. Walking down further I got my first sighting on the Sydney Opera house and did a little dance as I realized just how far away from home I was and how amazing it was to be in Australia! Right next door was the stunning harbour bridge all lit up at night it was magical.
Stan and I walked over to Harbourside for dinner of shared nachos and salad (he ordered the healthy bit of course!) and then we went off to lose our money in Star City casino on the wheel of fortune, had fun all the same and left $20 lighter.
