On Thursday I crossed over the Thai-Laos friendship bridge with Anouj a fellow volunteer from isara. We got our Laos visa really easily and grabbed a bus to vientaine, the Laos capital. Although we arrived and found out that the last bus to vang vieng was leaving at 2pm so we only had a couple of hours there. I found an amazing shop selling hand made Hmong people handicrafts, later turned out the shop was mentioned in my guidebook. We found a place to have Chinese for lunch but anouj didn't haveany money so quickly went off to find an ATM... There are only5 in the capital he tried all 4 and a bank and still couldn't getcash out. Half and hour later he came back munched down on his duck and we ran to get the bus!!
Four hours later and we'd checked into spicy Laos for the night. This place costs £2.60 a night! That includes wifi, breakfast, herbal sauna, movie room and so many hammocks it's unreal- plusone that can hold 7 people!!
First night here and we were truly touristy finding ourselves in a restaurant showing friends reruns and pillows you lie back on with a beer Laos- very relaxing!
Waking up to a Ginger moggy demanding to come into my mosquito net I joined e everyone for breakfast and at 11 the owner gave us a history lesson about Laos, Thailand and Cambodia. It was really interesting, in all of Laos there are only 6 million people. In parts of Laos they use the empty bomb shells left overfrom the Vietnam war to decorate their houses, as planters and made into fences!
We decided to join in the motorbiking to nearby caves and it was stunning. I didn't trust myself to ride a bike alone so shared with Fabien. Lunch was a weird experience, two guys showed up with two ducks in a bag...still alive! They were killed infront of us and bled into a bowl, the blood was made into a jelly sauce. Such a mad day, one guy was lunged at by a snake, our guide off his bike whilst crossing a tiny wooden bridge and mine and fabien's bike stopped working in the middle of a tiny village. The locals all came over to say hello and to stare at us, I don't think they see many foreigners. Last night we all enjoyed the touristy bucket bar..a bucket of drink and a good old boogie it was really good fun as most people made it out.
Today we're all off tubing down the Nam Song river, you hire a tube and float down the river stopping at bars to drink and jump off ropes into the river. Can't wait!
