Sarah's Travels
Hi guys
I managed to survive the Cyclone, which was actually a bit of a non event in Darwin. We only caught the tail end of it with some heavy rain and strong winds. Other areas were not so lucky and got hit quite badly...saw some of the flooding when I went on tour into Kakadu National Park. I did a three day tour which ended up being nothing like the description in the brochure due to sever flooding. But our guide, Keith, made the most of it - he has been a guide for 12 years and new other places to take us too instead. We ended up swimming in some amazing rock pools and under waterfalls, seeing aboriginal rock art dating back 20,000 years as well as coming across animals such as the black walleroo. I then had another night in Darwin before heading on the second part of my 10 tour which three days was driving from Darwin to Alice Springs (about 1500 km). It was long but we stopped off at a various interesting places - Daly Waters which is the oldest pub in Oz and the town has a population of 24 people, we also went swimming in Thermal pools, drove over the tropic of Capricorn (there really is a line across the road to indicate where it is!!). We then had one night in AS before heading out on the last part of a tour which was three days in the Red Centre. We walked through the Valley of the Winds at Kata Tjuta (The Olgas), saw sunrise and sun set at Ularu (Ayres Rock) and did the rim walk around Kings Canyon. It was a pretty whirlwind 10 days but I had an amazing time and met some great (and some crazy) people! Claire & Amy from the UK, George from Spain, Marina & Tiff from Switzerland and so many others!!
The next few days were spent chilling out in AS there isn't a great deal to do in Alice but it was nice to sleep in a bed rather than a swag and take for granted that I could have a shower rather than waiting until we came to a roadhouse.
On Tuesday I got a 4wd bus from AS to Perth - three days and 2000+km of dirt road through the outback was another interesting experience but we did get to see many wild camels, some of which we had to stop for because they were sitting in the middle of the dirt road and really didn't want to move to let us past!!
Anyway arrived in Perth today, got a bit of bad news as my step dad got taken into hospital yesterday but although serious he should be ok...
Hope everyone is well and will catch up more soon
Saz x
