Rome, Italy
Buongiorno! It is day 3 in Rome & time to write my first travel blog before I do too much travel and do long & boring posts. 26+ hours of travel to get here did get a little bit long and boring at times (those plane seats are just not made for people my height!), but we had a great selection of food & good movies :-)
We touched down at 5:30am, and caught the train straight into Central Rome (30min), chatting to some other Aussies on the way. Walked to our hotel, but room wasnt ready yet so we dropped our bags and started to explore! We are just 5min from Fontana di Trevi (Trevi Fountain) which was the 1st stop - it was turned off for cleaning & vacuuming out the money (about 3000€ is thrown in there everyday)! We went off to order our first caffelatte & croissant nearby to wait for the fountain to be turned on, still not on, we headed to the Spanish Steps another 5 min away. Finally the fountain was on when we comeback past! Legend has it that if you throw a coin into the fountain (using your right hand & throwing over your left shoulder) this will ensure your return to Rome. If you check put my pic on FB, you will see that we did it wrong! Hopefully I will still come back here one day!
It was still only about 9:30am so we thought we would head over to the Colloseum. It is amazing! It is so so huge, and has such amazing craftsmanship for those times! We had a guided tour which was great. We had a tasty pizza from a snack back for lunch & checked into our hotel. Rested our feet, had a shower then headed out for an early dinner at Piazza Navona. Our waiter tried to teach us some italian, which has now come in handy. Everyone here is lovely. We also stopped at the Panthenon which was conveniently on the way! Everything is within walking distance here!
Day 2, we took a guided tour of The Vattican Museum, Sistine Chapel & St Peters Basilica with Trip Advisors top tour guide...all by chance! (Angelo was American and knew his stuff!). Very worth it! At the end of the tour I chose to climb 320 stairs (I paid 2€ to get the elevator past the first 200+ steps!) to enjoy 360 degree views of Rome (pics to come!), it wasn't as hard as I thought it would be and was so worth it!
On a side note..the man at our hotel told us about te best coffee in Rome, so we stopped in on our way to the basilica...unfortunately it was not the best coffee...even more unfortunately when we left the shop we realized we went to the wrong place! The names were similar! We stopped back at the correct shop on the way back to the hotel..I think I have had better coffee elsewhere though!
Dinner a local restaurant (Giovannis) & Gelato saw the end of the night. We were ready for bed! Off to Florence today for our first experience in a hostel! Looking forward to it & will keep you posted. Pics to come soon!
