The joy of the beach life. Ko Phayam is a beautiful island paradise. A jungle clad little bit of land in the Andaman Sea with cashew nut trees, white sand beaches, birds singing and the sound of waves. Yes there are backpackers but it's very quiet, very relaxed. And you can buy a gin and tonic.
We hung out with Manu for a few more days before he headed off to Bangkok. Since then I've been trying to get as brown as humanly possibly. Tobias has tried to teach me how to surf which basically involved me screaming whilst waves crashed over my head. Oh dear.
It would be amazing if the island could stay untainted, a haven in amongst Thailand's many commercially exploited islands. But talking to an American lady working in one of the cafes, she's not convinced and says that the construction and exploitation in the past two years has been intense, with vast areas of jungle cut away to make room for more bungalows.
Tobias left today to continue on with his travels. You know how I am with goodbyes and it was sad. There were tears. But off we go, on another adventure.
I've been reading like a crazy person all the time I've been travelling and there's been so much literary enlightenment, thanks in the most part to my sister Jess who downloaded loads of books for me before Christmas. I've just finished a David Mitchell novel called The Bone Clocks. I've always been a huge fantasy geek but this struck a particular cord, as all his books do for me. A talented author indeed. Here's the sentence that sums it up; Human cruelty can be infinite. Human generosity can be boundless.
I hate to go all peace and love on you. But yes. What matters more than to be kind to people, to see the beauty in the world and to feel and give love? That's what our insignificant time is all its about, right?
As an antidote, I'm reading American Psycho. Nothing but eclectic :)

Bernadette The most important things in life perfectly summed up in one beautiful sentence... You are so lovely, Ray. Selfishly, I can't wait for you to be home again but I'm so happy you are having this little bit of time in paradise. Enjoy xx
