Bellavista, Santiago Day 2 (Not San Rafael, Argentina - not sure why location is off)
San Rafael, Argentina
We literally slept in till 10:30 today. By the time we made it out of our apartment, M & J kept asking about breakfast and we were like no breakfast for you! Took the subway to the Centro Gabriela Mistral cultural center and when we emerged on the street saw that the Maraton (marathon) de Santiago was on. The entire Avenue Libertador Bernardo O'Higgins was closed. We watched for a while and then Grabbed some assorted empanadas, raspberry juice, and some non-alcoholic Malta for lunch. Then we went over to the CGM and explored. There were three different dance groups practicing outside and an eerie exhibit inside which James said he didn't care for because it made him sad. The outside of the building is covered by a rusted facade and inside an atrium capped with stained glass. Before the coup in 1973 artists worked with the architects to incorporate art in the design of the building but after the coup (thanks America) the art was largely ransacked. The kids met a feral dog they fell in love with and A and I had to endure 15 minutes of negotiations on why we should adopt a Chilean dog. Then off to super cool neighborhood Bellavista. In our attempts to find the Jesus statue at the top of the hill, we ventured onto a mountain biking only trail. Thankfully for the mountain bikers we turned around halfway up in the interests of not putting them In grave danger and made our way back to the neighborhood in search of ice cream - having never found Jesus. Dinner, drinks, and people watching at the Backstage in Bellavista. Two more feral dogs ... one got the last of our burgers, a meeting with two of the successful marathoners and a discussion on how much they planned to drink tonight, and holy cow a 12 piece Latin salsa band drew a crowded dance floor! On a Sunday! Back home on the subway and Inside Africa on CNN. And WWII documentaries on Netflix. Tooth fairy finally remembered to come and dropped off a mound of Chilean pesos under James' pillow. He found them, counted them and did a quick internet search. "Mom, dad! I got like $16 from the tooth fairy!" "No you didn't - you were looking at the Mexican peso exchange rate. In Chilean pesos you got 47 cents!" James didn't think that was funny. (More pics in photos.)
