Time for another update on what i have been up to. Which to be honest hasnt been alot of activity. After New Zealand, a break was well and truely needed so we headed to the islands of Fiji. And what a delight they were. First of all, we had to get there which ended up taking an extra six hours waiting at Auckland airport. We actually sat on the plane beofre they carted us all of again saying that there was an issue with the air conditioning. Hmm, i guess thats kind of important, so it took six hours to fix it. In the mean time, we were given 2x $12 food vouchers whcih were put to good use. Food and beer! Finally, by midnight we had eventually arrived into our hotel in Nadi, Fiji, ready for the holiday to begin. We caught the boat the following day to our first island, Kuata. We did this package where you sail to a couple of different islands and the boat picks you up and takes you to another one. It worked out well. So there we were in paradise, time to chill out and enjoy, Fiji time. Which generally means doing nothing. We had a gorgeous view of the opposite island, so hung out on the beach. In true fijian style, we didnt have electrcity, so the first night of staying there was abit hairy. Especially trying to but up the mosquito net by candle light. I found a spider in my net which wasnt very comforting, not that i mind spiders but i dont fancy sleeping with one! So in the evening we just hung out with some friends who we traveled around New Zealand with on our tour. We called ourselves ´Team Fiji´. Original i know, but it worked for us! Planning cards by candlelight became the norm as supposedly we were to have electricty by 6.30, but we hardly ever saw it. The food however was delicious and plentiful. I think we all gained a few extra punds with the carb diet they fed us, buy boy was it good. It was a whole mixture of stuff, none of it really complimented the other, but i guess thats just fijian food! After two days, we were off again to the next Island. Although, we had pre arranged to meet a couple of swedish girls who were also part of Team Fiji, who had arrived on the toher island the day before us. Are only means of communicating with them on the opposite islands was the good old fashioned, messag in a bottle! And it worked. We passed it on to a guy who had met the girls at the opposite island and had mentioned of us, so he knew exactly who to give the bottle to. We had tried all sorts of ways to get to them, even trying morse code. Anyway, it worked as the next day, when we got of the boat, they were waiting for us. Every time you landed on a new island, you had to shout BULA! Its fijian for hello. They also sung as a song and played the guiter. This island was much better though. Much morelively and they did have electricity. It only worked from about 6-12pm, but at least we didnt have to take a shower in the dark! Oh, and did i mention that they were cold showers! Anyway, it had a lovely pool over looking the sea and, great pina coladas. We hung out there for a couple of days and watched amazing sunsets and swang on the hammocks. The locals did this Bula dance every night which we all had to join in and off course we played cards again! On the sunday morning, before we left, we went to church. It was really amazing to see the locals from this little island all come along and sing their hearts out. It was really cheerful and entertaining and the kids looked like they were having an amzing time. Ther was alot of ´Halaluahs´and ´Praise the Lord´ but that was all part of the fun. We did giggle though, it was very gospal like.
Anyway, the time finally came for us to go. We did prepare a second message in the bottle for our friends who had left the day before us as a surprise. We´re not sure if they got it, but it was fun preparing it, and surprisingly, you will do anything for entertainment!
That night as the boat sailed back to Nadi, we saw the most amazing sunset. One of my best since traveling. The only one which might beat that was on new years day in Perth. It was stunning yellows, oranges, reds, pinks and purples. A perfect way to end my time in Fiji before setting off to Hawaii!
Check out my next blog for what happened in Hawaii!
