We are finally on the road! Months of planning, and it's finally here. We got on the road about 10:15 this morning, right about on schedule. Day one was a big day of driving, nearly 450 miles I think, ending us just outside of Morehead, KY.
We went the shorter/slower/more scenic route, heading straight west and taking I-66 to US-55 through West Virginia. That took us on some tortuous hills-- it was a novel experience to be the one holding up the traffic instead of being the one swearing at the slow drivers ahead of us. But the route was gorgeous, passing Smoke Hole Caverns, Seneca Rocks, and close to Dolly Sods. We haven't spent nearly as much time in West Virginia as we should.
So here we are at the Outpost Campgrond. $23 including water and electric. We did manage to have our first major crisis, when Kieran managed to fall off his bike in about the first ten minutes. Good thing we brought the first aid kit. (This on top of Elena taking a chinner last night while trying out the big blue bike for the first time. Well, now they match.)
Tomorrow is another big driving day, that should take us all the way to St. Louis. But we will at least get to our first real stop along the way, Lincoln's Boyhood national historic site.
