Last night we travelled by bus from Lima to Pisco to spend the night. We went for a look round town and you can see the damaged buildings from the earthquake in 2006. Apparently Pisco has been hit by 2 earthquakes and a tsunami within the past 5 years! We spent the evening having a meal then drinking beers on the roof top.
This morning we left at 7.30 and headed out to the harbour to catch a boat to the ballestas islands, which are a group of islands covered in birds, sealions, seals and penguins. On the way there the bumpy speedboat drove past the giant candelabrah on the mountainside which is a mystery as nobody knows what it means and who put it there but is said to be linked to the nazca lines.
After returning to the hotel to pick up our cases we had a one hour trip to Huacachina, an oasis in the middle of the desert. This is where the fun really begins. After lunch we all boarded sand buggies and raced off into the sand dunes on a crazy ride jumping and drifting around the dunes, stopping off now and again to sandboard down the giant dunes! It was possibly one of the most fun experiences of the trip as was total adrenaline and everyone had an amazing time. We are about to head off on a 2 hour trip to Nazca, this time we will be travelling by American muscle cars down the pan-American highway, can't wait!
