We got a quick breakfast this morning and made a beeline for the gangway to checkout La Paz. Mom's knee is bothering her so she opted out of the shore trip today. It was a short day made even shorter by another hour because of a last minute change in the ship itinerary. We docked at 8am but have to be back on board by 12:30pm and it takes 40 minutes by shuttle bus to get to the town. That doesn't leave much time to do anything but I want to see La Paz. Mom heads back from breakfast while we disembark. When we get off, there's a Mariachi band playing right on the dock with a bunch of booths set up with Mexican crafts, souvenirs, t-shirts, etc. They even have a bar set up there with $1.50 beer. I didn't think Mom even knew about this but we have no way to tell here what she's missing so off we go. We get into LaPaz a bit after 9am after traveling through a mostly industrial area.
We exited the bus station and right onto the "Malecon". It's like a boardwalk with no boards. It's Boomer and Min's family's first time to Mexico and they don't understand that it costs 5 pesos to go to the toilet. I have pesos and save the day.
As the guide put it, "To experience La Paz, you must feel the warmth of its people and see the beauty the Mar de Cortez has to offer. No place on earth has the perfect balance of scenery, activities and pure relaxation as does La Paz. Take a romantic stroll along the Malecon, dine in one of La Paz's many fine restaurants or just grab one of the best hotdogs you'll find anywhere. Wake up and head out for a great day of fishing, kayaking or scuba diving. When you return and freshen up, you are sure to find some nightlife that fits your lifestyle, from tame to shame and everything in between."
We walk around the beach area and Main Street taking pictures. Boomer stops at Bancomer, a major bank in Mexico to get $60 worth of pesos. Then Min bought us some fruit smoothies and we returned to the bus depot to get an early start on the crowds returning to the ship. Everybody must have been on that plan as the line to get a shuttle was around the block. We waited and drank our smoothies. After only a couple of hours in town, we were back in the bus returning to the ship. We wandered through the vendors selling stuff on the dock before returning to our staterooms.
Like we thought, Mom knew nothing about the festivities going on just outside on the wharf but her knee is still bothering her so she wasn't that interested. Mom? Not interested in shopping? She must be hurting. We had another fancy dinner tonight. Some Thai waiters have found Min and her parents and, missing their homeland, they converse in Thai with our group, bringing us all different kinds of things to try and giving us the "Royal Treatment". It's nice to have friends. Mom and I went to the Barry Manilow concert, featuring a cousin of Barry from Australia. Boomer's group opted for a dancing show. The dancing show was good. The Barry Manilow imitator was terrible, just a time killer. So we left and went to a game show hosted by the cruise director.
Tomorrow, the best port in my opinion, Puerto Vallarta.
Thar was fun but it ended at 11pm and we have a busy day tomorrow. The ship's schedule has changed again and we won't arrive in Puerto Vallarta until 11, not 10am. Now we're not sure if we can make the dolphin swim set for 11:15am. Boomer will call them in the morning. I just hope Mom's knee is better tomorrow since her speed of walking around the ship tonight is rapidly placing her in the "Geezer" class.
Nighty night.
