It was nice waking up today without the thought of hauling those suitcases somewhere. We were still up at 6:30 but Karen cleaned and organized while I checked email and loaded photos to the blog. We went downstairs for a complimentary breakfast which was great. After breakfast, we decided to make a side trip to Nuremberg. They have a large Christmas Market there and we have the time so we caught the train around 10:30 for the one hour ride.
Grabbing a taxi at the Nuremberg HBF, we were at the Market in 10 minutes. It is pretty large and it took us several hours to cover. The larger cities usually have several markets scattered about town but we only have time for one of them. Nurmberg is famous for its "prune people", little people made from prunes, figs, walnuts and other natural food products. We haven't seen any of these decorations in any of the markets so far so today should be the day. We stop first at the ATM, the restrooms and for something to eat. I like the finger size sausages on a roll with a corn cob while Mom opted for a meatball sandwich. Both were good. No eggnog Gluhwein although the lady said it was. Yuk! Lots of booze in it, no eggs. I guess it's ok since I wanted the glass from Nurmberg. Mom did find a few things and, of course, prune people. We hung out for the afternoon, catching the 3:30pm train back to Regensberg. We arrive in an hour and head to the hotel for some organizing and recuperation.
We still want to go to the Thurns & Taxis Market which is open late but our plan is to stop at a restaurant on the way for some dinner. It's quite a walk, probably half mile and Mom, albeit a bit slow, makes the trek with just one rest stop. No restaurants to be found so she's stuck eating market food. She's not happy about that.
The market is very beautiful with lighted torches, bonfires and little huts scattered about the palace grounds. Of course, she finds a few things here too. There's a hut with all kinds of animal decorations and she gets a bird and an owl. Knowing that we have a long walk ahead of us, we leave around 8:30pm and this trip requires a few more rest stops. Thinking back, it was just a few months ago that Karen was using a walker to get around so I think she's doing pretty good. Back at the hotel, I write a little on the IPad and watch the only English station on TV, that's CNN. Mom tries to figure out how to get her recent purchases in the suitcases and comes up with an ingenious plan. She says she doesn't need all these clothes and throws some in the garbage can. "There, now there's more room", she says proudly. That sounds like a plan we could have had before we left home.
We were here in Regensburg for two days and tomorrow we leave for Augsburg followed by Salzburg, Austria on Wednesday and then Thursday we head to our final hotel location on the train portion of our journey, Basel, Switzerland.
Guten tag.
