At one point we thought we'd take the "short route" around the rocks on the headland between beaches, & avoid going back up via the cliffs. You got some fantastic views from there but it got a bit treacherous in places and clumsy old me slipped, and now I have part of my big toenail missing. Owwweee. Oh well I guess it will heal!
So we left there, and headed up towards Cairns, taking a detour up the Paluma National Park Mountain Range to see some waterfalls & lookouts. Well, we made it to the first waterfall. The car didn't. It conked out on a particularly steep bit of road, so we hitch-hiked the rest of the way up the hill & got to swim in the waterfall pools anyway. Sod the car. It was lush.
Miraculously managing to turn the car aound on the steep twisty mountain road and coast it down to the bottom of the hill, we (even more miraculously) got it to the next town, Innisfail, where we spent the night, and sorted the car out this morning (turns out Eric is a bit of a dab hand with the old mechanics).
It's now running like clockwork, and after 2 nice stops today at Josephine Falls and Babinda Boulders (pictured), we've made it up to Cairns.
Because it's teeming with travellers you can't avoid tonnes of fantastic booze & grub offers being thrust at you at every corner, so we're off to sample the delights of Australia's most notorious meat market, The Woolshed! :-)
Spk soon,
A.x
P.S. After falling asleep on Magnetic Island my entire face is peeling off in shreds and I look HIDEOUS.
