Swansea, UK
I've been here a month, I guess it's time to set up my blog...
This was posted on Feb. 29th but I'm setting the date to the day I arrived because I'm new to this website and I'm not sure if it'll be in chronological order. Bear with me as I figure out this whole blog thing!
In case you don't know, I am a sophomore Chemical Engineering student at Texas A&M University who is an exchange student at Swansea University for the spring 2016 semester.
Since I've been here, I've been asked so many times "Why did you pick to study in Swansea?" If you want to know, I have some generic answers with some truth behind them for you:
- It's a great engineering school!
- Swansea and Texas A&M work closely together to make sure my classes transfer
- I wanted to be close to the water
- I wanted to go somewhere that they speak English
But the real reason is that I got an email in September of last year that told me there were some study abroad opportunities for the very next semester in Japan, Qatar, and Swansea. I had no idea where Swansea was, so I googled it and decided it might be cool, so I applied. Before I knew it I was accepted, my parents had approved it, and I was set to go to Swansea before I even got a chance to think about if I really wanted to go to Wales or not. So really, I accidentally ended up in Wales. But thats the long version so I usually just go with one of my other answers.
When I got here I had an initial feeling of "oh my god why did I pick Wales" due to the two weeks of miserably cold rain and wind. But after one sunny day and a walk on the beach I felt like I had made the right decision. Thats when I took the picture accompanying this blog post. To the right is campus, and to the left the beach. Being that close is a dream come true to me.
I've become close to a few girls that are also exchange students, and each one of them make me thankful that I'm here with them. We go exploring the nearby Gower Peninsula together on weekends and every time we're together my ribs hurt from laughing so hard.
I'm lucky that things worked out the way they did. I'll post more to talk about our mini excursions so far...
