After a ten and a half hour flight, I finally landed in San francisco 2pm local time (10pm uk time). Used the BART to get into the centre then walled up one of sanfranciscos famous steep hills to get to the hostel. Place seems pretty good. not exactly the hilton but rooms are a decent size and theres a good social area downstairs. I'm sharing a room with three guys from portugal who are on a roadtrip. Nic enough guys but don't speak much english so the conversations a bit staggered. Woke up this morning having had a resonable nights sleep. think i've still got jetlag (all part of the fun I guess). Got the tram down to fishermas Wharf and hired a bike. Cycled over the Golden Gate bridge and pass Alcatraz ( about a 9 mile ride apparently. much easier on the way back as its gown hill. Speant the rest of the day wondering round the bay area getting my bearings. Saw the Sea Lions which i a must and had Clm chowder on the pier. San Franciso is definanly and intersting place. I'l definaly be ready fro sleep again tonight.
On day two I decided to tale the city tour to get my bearings. THe first thing was the downtown tour. It takes you through all the major areas of the city. China town, The tenderloin (rough) district though the city and along the wharf area past the golden gate broidge to the bay bridge. I also took the time to get down and see the sea lions. very cute but very smelly. After this I went on the golden gate tour. this takes you through the posh area of Pacific heights whee there are homes starting at $2m. pst Crissy fields and then over the Golden Gate bridge. it was a really clear day so the city views were great.
On day three I took the the infamous trip over to alcatraz. It's a pretty sobering place. I couldn't spend 5 minites let a lone 5 years in the cells. They have a great audio tour as you wall round which is narated by the guards and inmates. The really stage thing is that Alcatraz probably has the best view of San francisco, I guess that was double punishment. At the end of the tour one of the original imates was doing a book signing. he looked pretty gone.
