Today was an early rise day - 4:00am, so that we could drive to the airport, drop off our car and get checked into the flight to Sydney Australia. We had plenty of time and it is a good thing because there was a marathon that morning! Maui is a small Island and does not have many main roads, so the road to the airport was the route of the marathon! Police, cones and runners for about 85% of the drive to the airport but we made it in plenty of time. We flew from Maui to Honolulu and from there, it is an 11-hour flight to Sydney, Australia. The flight was very calm, and we ate, drank, read, and watched a movie all the way to Australia. When we arrived, the temperature was in the mid 60's so we were glad we had our light jackets with us. This was the first time Carol has been south of the equator while Fred has crossed many times while he was in the Merchant Marines. We crossed the International Date Line, so we left Sunday morning and arrived Monday night. We found out that Australia and New Zealand have 7 different times zones. Some of them use Daylight Savings Time, some don't, some differ by an hour, some differ by ½ hour and some by ¼ hour, so we may not figure out what time it is until we get back in the States! See the picture for more details.
Our friends had suggested a hotel for us to stay in that was right across the street from the airport so we spent the night there. When we settled in, we were able to see a 20-minute recap of the Red Sox victory and then a 20-min recap of the Patriots victory. Great day in Boston sports.
