Finally left sydney on 4th April and headed for Port Maquarie, 8 hrs north of Sydney. We reached about half way and stopped for a meal break, after a quick loo break and a cuppa we were all back on the bus, except the bus was going nowhere...fast!!! 3 hours later (and a few more cups of tea) we were back on the road and eventually made it to Port Maquarie and few hours later and went straight to bed. The next day was gorgeous sunshine so we made the most of this by the pool, this was a lovely little town even though there wasnt an awful lot to do here, it was relaxing and it was great to be on the move again.
Saturday (07/04) we were on the move again to Coffs Habour, once there the real fun began!!! Checked into our room and were greeted with a Scary Mary look-a-like. She was off her rocker to the extent that she actually got chucked out of the hostel by the owner for making everyone feel uncomfortable....everyone didnt have to share a room with her......i slept with one eye open!!!! Easter Monday in Coffs we went Horse Riding, real good fun until one girl fell off her horse, everyone held on a bit tighter after that, was wicked fun and learned to canter, although my whole body (especially my bum) was sore for days!!!!
On the move again we left Coffs and headed for Byron Bay, the bus was an hour late picking us up but we eventaully got there and loved Byron the minute we saw it, goes to show as we planned to stay for a week and ended up staying for 3!!! We initially booked into a Teepee which looked amazing, sleeping in it was another thing, it had no real walls and so was freezing at night, come the morning as soon as the sun came up t heated the plastic roof and nearly baked us alive, after that we moved into a normal room for the rest of our time there. The days were very lazy, either spent on the beach, by the pool or reading in the hammocks. By night the Arts Factory (the hostel) came alive, bags of goon (wine) were flying around everywhere and lots of drinking games were always going on. No one every really went out in town as it was much more fun staying around the hostel and drinking there. We hired a car and took a trip to Nimbin as it was cheaper than doing an organised tour.....or so we though. Dumb and Dumber thought it'd be a good idea to have a fag in the car....not when dropped the car back off and got a $50 fine....school boy error, wont be doing that again!!! Wanting to stay as long as possible in this wicked place we even cleaned the kitchen (which was pretty nasty after 100's of people have been in there and not cleared up after themselves!!) for a free nights accommodation (the tings you do eh!!). Wanting to find work a bit further up the coast we booked to do an RSA course (a course you HAVE to complete if you want to work anywhere that sells alcohol) so we booked and paid ($85.......it hurt!!) turned up on the designated day and started the course, 20 mins in i realised that this course was only valid in New South Wales, we would be in Queensland by tomorrow!!!! Thankfully she gave us our money back with no fuss, it could have been worse!!!!
Monday 30th April we eventaully left the Arts Factory and Byron Bay behind (very sad :( and headed for Surfers paradise, the plan was to stay here for 2 days. We checked into Cheers Backpackers which we immediately knew was not going to be good, after the first night Alicia had Bed Bugs!!! We didnt get a great feel for Surfers Paradise, it felt a little bit like being in Benidorm. Here we met Karin (who we'd met in Byron for 1 night) for a drink and she convinced us that if we needed work (which we did) here would be a really good place to get work, it was so easy......we said we'd sleep on it. We met a few Essex lads who also said work was really easy to find here (probably a reason for that...no one wants to stay here very long!!) In the end we decided it wouldnt be a bad idea, work hard for a month and then move on so thats what we did!!! I actually ended up with 2 jobs, one in a little cafe 2 days a week and another in a tele-marketing job, the easiest $600 ive ever made in my life!!! Time at surfers quickly came and went and before long we was happy to be one the move again with a little extra money in our pockets.
Sunday 27th was moving day, we were off to Brisbane!!! We had arranged to meet up with Laura (from xmas) as well so weere really looking forward to getting there. Karin had decided that she was tagging along with us (she's the kind of girl thats alright in small doses...very small doses!!) so didnt really have much choice in that. Made it to Brisbane and met up with Laura, so nice to see her after 6 months, of course we had the regulation catch up drink and spent the next few hours getting up to speed on what had been happening. After a while hunger set in and so we set off into town on a mission to find a roast dinner......instead we found the Welsh Rugby Team!!! They were ok, let us take some pictures and had a little chat but other than that they wernt over friendly......I made the mother of all comments, feeling fairly confident talking to a "celebrity" i asked "so guys, what you doing over here"?!?!.......he looked at me like i was a complete loser and said "erm....we're playing rugby"......DOH!!!!! For our last day in Brisabne we took the ferry down the river to South Bank where there was a man made beach in the middle (no beaches in Brisbane as its inland), not that we sat on it as it started pouring down, we made it into a little cafe and got some lunch. The obligatory goodbye drinks were had that night just in time for Karin to roll up!!!!
