Another lovely breakfast... this time on the patio. Then we started looking for wineries. We drove into Stellenbosch to the visitor's centre and found a map of local wineries. The GPS was worth its weight in gold as it lead us straight to Lanzerac (http://www.lanzerac.co.za/index_main.htm) our first winery of choice (they had a tasting and a tour scheduled at exactly the right time!), which would have otherwise taken us hours to find.
We did the winery tour and tasted 10 wines in total and bought two - one was an amazing Shiraz that I absolutely loved and will likely never be able to find again. Then on to Hazendal winery, which is heavily Russian and quite strange. Not as nice of a tasting experience, but so strange it was funny. They had a Faberge collection, mediocre Russian art from the early '90s, iconography, and a collection of rare vodkas (not for tasting... just for looking at the bottles).
Then time for lunch... There was no rhyme or reason to the wineries we picked, so we pretty much traversed the Stellenbosch region, seeing the same bits often more than once. And there are wineries all over the place! Almost ever other driveway seemed to have a winery sign.
Lunch at 96 Winery Rd (the restaurant at Ken Forrester Vineyard - www.kenforresterwines.com) was amazing. They had more wines by the glass than I've ever seen... John had warthog/crocodile skewers and I had incredible mussels with a Chenin Blanc sauce.
Our last winery of the day, Warwick (www.warwickwine.com) was great... fantastic ambience... decent wines (better reds than whites).
Then we headed back to the B&B and over to the Super Spar (possibly the best supermarket chain ever) for dinner fixin's. Cheeses from Fairview (a local winery and cheese maker), plums, nectarines, grapes, buns and more wine from Warwick.
We sat on the patio at the B&B watching stars and talking... overall a great day!
