Arrived from the airport at the hotel in Bantry Bay around 10am. A 12 hour flight over night and a two hour time difference is very disorienting... John and I were entirely confused about what time it was.
The flight from London to Cape Town was delayed quite a while, but John and I were more than happy to wait in the lounge and drink champagne.
But at least the food on the plane was good (actually, it was fantastic! and in first class you get real flatware and glasses) and it was nice to be able to stretch out. The BA first class pods are quite classy - even if the airline did lose my luggage for more than two weeks on my way back to Vancouver!
After dropping our bags at the hotel, we walked down to the V&A Waterfront had lunch at a strange cafe attached to an outdoor apparel store. After the 4km walk from our hotel to the V&A Waterfront without sunscreen (both coming from cloudy climes John and I forgot the realities of spending time outdoors) we tracked down some SPF 30 and headed back to the hotel.
The waterfront walk between our Bantry Bay hotel and the V&A Waterfront was very nice. Parks and beaches and the ocean. There were people lounging/sleeping/sitting in the shade and lots of dogs. At first glance, Cape Town reminded me of Miami... although we certainly got a glimpse of the poverty.
We returned to the hotel for naps and showers... and then set out walking again to Camps Bay. The sun set just as we got to Camps Bay and we went looking for a place to have dinner. We found a place called Blues (that just happened to be mentioned in the Time Out Cape Town guide) and both John and I felt quite underdressed.
Our table had a fantastic beach-front view and we got to see the last rays of the setting sun.
We started with a springbok carpaccio - our first taste of South African cuisine - and both had seafood for mains (I had calamari, John had fish). And, of course, the first of many bottles of South African wine.
After dinner we took a ridiculously cheap cab back to the hotel (the 10 minute drive was less than $3) and rather overtipped.
The first day was exhausting and we collapsed into bed almost immediately after returning to the hotel.
