Arrived in Hervey Bay and spent the first few hours in a big stress!! We had booked our Fraser Island trip at beginning of January and spoken to the girl in reservations about 3 times but turned up and they said they didn't have our booking on system. Even better they were fully booked and would have to see if anyone would be willing to go a day later on their trip. No body wanted to so we had to leave the induction meeting like naughty little school girls!!!! However we were very lucky that after ringing about 6 other hostels one had enough space to take us. Worked out nicer as we were with a much smaller group and had more space in our jeep. Spent one night in Hervey Bay and then set off for Fraser Island the next morning.
Got the ferry to Fraser Island about 10am and went straight to Lake McKenzie when we got there. This is a really beautiful lake but was cloudy when we got there so didn't get the full effect of the shiny blue water. Next we headed straight for the beach highway!! We both had a go at driving the jeep along the beach which was great fun!! We stopped to look at a shipwreck called the Maheno, some sacred aboriginal rocks called The Pinnacles and the biggest creek on the island called Eli Creek. Both nights we stayed at K'Gari campsite and slept in a rotunda. This was probably slightly better than camping but we had to endure the biggest spiders ever!!!!!!!!! Horrible things with massive bodies and claw like legs...not good when you have to go to the toilet in the dark and they are all above you.
Second day we drove up to Indian Head and walked up to the cliff top which had great views of the island. Next stop was the Champagne Pools which was the only place on the island that you can swim in salt water but only the two boys gave that a go (us girls didn't fancy it, very rocky!). Had lunch back at the campsite and then sunbathed at Eli Creek for the rest of the afternoon.
Both nights we were treated to a performance by two aboriginals who live and work on the site. The boys were able to have a go at playing the didgeridoo but girls weren't allowed according to the aboriginal laws.
On the final day before we got the ferry back we planned to go to Lake Wabby and then another look at Lake McKenzie but when we came out to drive up the beach the tide was out so were delayed setting off by a couple of hours. Only had time to go to Lake Wabby as it was a bit of a trek across sand dunes to get there. Another really beautiful lake and were swimming alongside catfish.
Got back to Hervey Bay and went straight for a shower as we seemed to have carried about 3 tonnes of sand with us!! Just had a quiet night as were shattered from the trip. We had the next morning in Hervey Bay before our bus left so spent it out on the lovely beach there. Next stop Agnes Water...
