The bridge between Hari Hari and Hotika has finally been fixed after washing out last week with the floods, I'm not sorry that it took a while for us to get here. We hoped it was fixed before we had to leave Queenstown so that we would not have to make the decision to abondon the train journey & Franz Joseph Glacier and go directly to Christchurch.
We found out this morning that they closed the Queenstown road a couple of hours after we went through because of land slips. So far our luck is holding as far as the roads are ok when we need them.
We walked along the track to the glacier as far as we could but the river was in flood and the track was blocked and closed but you could still see it from a distance. We also went for one of the other walks and found a great view over the suspension bridge over the flooded river and great water falls, it was still raining of course and I ended up saturated o course. My waterproof jacket just didn't seem to be able to hack it and I looked and felt like a drowned rat.
It is still raining on and off today but it was looking like it was clearing mid morning with patches of blue sky and low winds.
We are going to try and get up onto the glacier again 4th time lucky. We had to put the heliflight back hoping for a good break in the weather.
We drove out to Fox Glacier for a better look than yesterday as the rain then was blowing staight up the mountain but the rain came back in.
We all decided to can the heliflight and head for Greymouth. So disapointed about that as we have tried muliple time to get there.
