We arrived in Nelson after a seven hour drive mainly in the dark down tiny windy roads. We kept playing games to keep everyone awake and we were a bit bored of our one cassette. We stayed in a little hostel called Accents on the Park opposite trafalgar square in the centre. It´s a bit different to Trafalgar square in London, it´s a cathedral surrounded by a green area. We were adventurous that night and went out for chinese.
The next day we went to a nearby national park- Abel Tasman, named after the first European explorer to enter New Zealand. It´s a good area for hikes but unfortunately we left a bit late so didn´t really have time for one. Instead we opted to get a boat ride around the cliffside. It was about a three hour ride stopping at famous points such as split apple rock. It has golden beaches and million pound houses with no electricity. Christina Aguilera once owned one there apparantly! The boat also took us over to a seal colony! Although we enjoyed it, we felt a hike would´ve been a better way of seeing the park.
A hike was what we got the next day! After visitng he cathedral we decided to head to the centre of New Zealand- a spot which is horizontically and vertically the centre of NZ. It sits on a hill at the top of park where they first played rugby in NZ! It was a nice up hill struggle but great views once we reached the top! The walk back down was a lot better. Our tour guide for our hike told us that mince and cheese pies were the best pies ever so we decided to try them before moving on to Picton. They were good!
