17 September 2017 - day 1 - leaving Brisbane
We are flying from Brisbane International Airport with Korean Airlines. It is a 9 hour 45 minutes flight. Departure was supposed to be 8:35 am but we were about 20 minutes late leaving. The plane was packed!
The reason we chose Korean Airlines is that when we decided to travel again, we joined a club and 'banked' some money. This meant that when it came time to book our tickets, we only had to pay$1,700.00 for two tickets. Plus, we wanted to fly as directly as possible to Amsterdam and fly out from Paris. We had two seats together so did not have to share our space!
As we are both 'fussy' eaters and had heard stories about the Asian cuisine, we decided to order 'special' meals. We chose diabetic meals for both as Wayne is still very weak and being extremely careful about his meals after his unplanned hospitalisation.
Soon after take-off, our first meal was served which we thought would have been breakfast! It was sort of 'breakfasty'!. It consisted of orange juice, a half of a jacket potato, an omelette, a piece of chicken breast, mushrooms, a cherry tomato, a bread roll, a green salad, a fruit salad consisting of four cubes of fruit, coffee and water. Time to settle in for a long flight! Fortunately, our seats were near the toilets so we could keep an eye on when they were free.
Next meal which arrived around 3:00 pm was more like a lunch. It consisted of mashed pumpkin, steamed fish, steamed spinach, tomato and onion sauce, a bread roll, a green salad with a slice of chicken breast on top, the same four cubes of fruit salad and a coffee.
It was a fairly bumpy flight with the fasten seat belts sign being turned on and off about 15 times!
We arrived at Seoul Incheon International Airport at 5:20 pm Brisbane time or 6:20 pm local time. Because our connecting flight was not until 2:25 pm the next day, we had an overnight stay in a Korean Airlines hotel.
Massive airport! Processing through Immigration took ages. After they scan your passport they take your photograph and scan your left and right index fingers. As our main luggage had been sent through to Amsterdam, we did not have to collet it. Next stop Customs. Our customs declaration form was collected and we were waved through!
We then had to find the airline hotel transfer desk. Everything is well signed. Checked in and we were staying at the Grand Hyatt West Tower Incheon. We had to wait about 10 minutes for a bus. We didn't realise that the airport is about 50 kilometres from the city of Seoul as we had planned to go for a walk in the city in the evening.
Arrived at the hotel. Huge! There were 1,022 rooms in the hotel! Checked in and received meal vouchers for dinner and breakfast. Dumped our bags and down to the buffet restaurant. Huge selection of food! We did not 'pig out' but did have a steak! Dinner over, we were both exhausted so up to the room for a shower and a well-earned sleep.
The room was very luxurious but the bathroom was even better! There was a fully automated toilet with bidet! Sit on the toilet and a gentle extractor fan started and the toilet 'beeped' once. Stand up and the toilet 'beeped' twice then flushed! (See photographs). I like the little icon of a 'bottom'! We were not sure what the button called 'SILVER' did and we were hot game to try it! Time for sleep! The beds were like laying on a cloud!
